I've been persuaded by my friends, mostly women (I humbly confess, I do make a few heads turn ) to write about my life. Where does one begin? I suppose this moment is as good as any . . .

Hi! I'm Beau. Perhaps it's my unique luscious coat or my athletic physique; but they also call me beautiful. I'm young, eager to explore, to take on life with wings beneath my feet. Take a walk with me and you'll know what I mean. My feet barely touch the ground as I stride in open spaces. I'd make a perfect companion for someone who shares my passion for life . . . like a running buddy!!! I admit, I do get excited at times in my pen , but that's just a facade, so that someone pays attention to me and takes me out. Some might even find me a tad overzealous, in the initial moments of my freedom. Wouldn't you do the same, if you were locked in and the world passed by in front of your eyes? Give me time, I can be a perfect gentleman too. I'd quietly sit right next to you, give you warmth in silence, or extend my paw to you like an old friend. Perhaps, you could then hug me or give me a treat (or two?) . . . I know I have lots to learn, and I really want to.

I'm not sure I understand how I got here or why am I here; But it gets lonely. I see families glance over me and I look at them expectantly as they pass by. I'm looking for my companion to start my life with. Everyone deserves a fair shot at life. I'm waiting for mine . . . while there's still time.

Buster is all boy, and is looking for someone to be his best pal. For those who are old enough to remember, he looks a lot like Petey, the dog on the old TV show, "The Little Rascals!" Just like Petey, Buster is waiting to get into all sorts of adventures with you.

Buster is a well-built American Bull Dog or Pit Bull mix. He's always ready to go do something and will need a confident, experienced owner who is familiar with active, strong, smart dogs. He would probably be too energetic for small children.

He has a great sense of fun and really loves stuffed toys that he can shake vigorously and toss about. Watch him pounce and play and you'll laugh right out loud at his antics! He's also very aware of his "house" manners and hates to go in his kennel, so if he's bouncing around in there, it's because he's holding it and waiting for you to take him out. A young boy with a neat streak - now that's really something!

Buster has been transferred to a foster group and has been living with a trainer who is helping him refine his manners and skills. Buster already knows sit, down, stay, come, heel, and is working on more. He should go to a home that will continue with his training. Included in his adoption are a complimentary go-home lesson and a follow-up private home lesson.

Buster would do best in an adult home with no cats and experienced owners. He is probably too much of a rough-houser for most dogs. He is a loving boy, but strong-willed.

5/16/2008 Update: Tate was adopted by a wonderful woman with a lot of dog experience yesterday. He did great his first day in his new home. He went on a long walk, played with the neighbor's labs, and had fun swimming in the pool. Tate may finally get the life he missed out on for so long. Good luck Tate!

Tate came to the shelter hungry and in need of medical care, but his hard luck in life hadn’t spoiled his good nature. His initial evaluation said he was calm and gentle. We hoped his luck would turn around when he was fed and cared for, but after being confined for 6 weeks – and 3 with no walks while his health needs were treated – his behavior has deteriorated. Now that he feels better, it is especially hard for this still-young boy to deal with life in the shelter and he is expressing his frustration by jumping and mouthing hard enough to break skin. The staff does not think it is fair to keep him at the shelter much longer, so Tate needs to find a home, by Sunday May 18th at 5 pm.
Tate can go only go to a foster home through a TLAC-approved rescue group. We have the rescue group, we need the foster home. Because he is still learning how to behave, he must go to a home without young children, and with someone who will be kind but firm in teaching him how to act. Tate loves treats so much – no doubt because he knows what it is to be hungry – that he should catch on quickly to treat-based training. He is smart and eager to please the volunteers who have earned his respect. Tate seems to be housebroken and he knows how to fetch. He did well in his walks on the trail and in his professional evaluation. He also loves playing in the water. Low-cost training options are available for Tate. 5/14/2008 update. We had a professional evaluation done on Tate so we would know what we were dealing with. Tate did great at the evaluation and on the ride over. If anyone wants more details, here is the evaluator's report.

Evaluation Report on "TATE" TLAC
Young (18-24mo) recently neutered black male mixed breed.

Tate was calm and relaxed on approach of both male and female adults
(no children present for evaluation).

Tate easily engaged in a game with a toy and remained appropriate even
at high levels of stimulation/frustration. He is quick to recover
from that intensity and settles quickly. He is confident but has no
knowledge of what is expected of him. He has no aggression
tendencies. I feel based on third hand reports of the bite incidents
that is was situational prolonged frustration. He has no intent for
aggression. He is willing to share both food and toys and shows no
tendency toward possessive behavior even when challenged. He handled
grooming and examination with minimum hesitancy and offered no
resistance. He has great potential for an active pet home or working
position. Training is highly encouraged to elicit proper behavior in

Learning how to sit for treats was a breeze for Terrence, and he is ready to study lots more skills. The wonderful thing about tiggers is tiggers are wonderful things! In addition to my glamorous tiger stripes, I have many excellent qualities that make me a wonderful canine companion. First of all, I'm very obedient. Combine my eagerness to please with my obvious athletic skills, and I'm a great candidate for fun dog-human sports like agility. I'm also extremely playful, affectionate with people, and very friendly with other dogs. But wait, there's more. The most wonderful thing about tiggers is: I want to be the one for you!

Marshmallow is so much more than the puppy factory her former owners used her as before dumping her. This older girl is a wonderful patient playmate and is helping several of our young dogs learn good play manners. Marshmallow is a mellow dog, but she loves to fetch and swim. Watch the video on our website of her catching a ball midair. This girl can jump! Sure she’s lost her girlish figure, but Marshmallow has a lot of life left to live and a lot of love to give.

2/14/2008 update. Marshmallow's heartworms are being treated at no cost by TLAC. She'll be back in the adoption area soon. This is great news and Marshmallow should be good as new in a few weeks.

Barney was adopted by a retired military man and his family with four kids. They were drawn to him by his cage spinning, so I guess it's a good thing we never broke him of that habit after all.

If there were a football team for dogs, Barney would be the star quarterback. Athletic, rugged, confident, and a bit of a ladies man, Barney loves a good game, though he prefers catching the ball to throwing it. This charming guy is always eager to spend more time with his human fans, adults and kids alike. Like any quarterback, Barney needs the leadership of a good coach to be the best team player he can be. The surefire way to motivate Barney to a game winning performance? It's no secret that this enthusiastic dog will do anything for a treat.

Note: Barney likes having the respect due the captain of the team and has been known to get into shouting matches when other dogs start talking trash to him on the field. He may be happiest as the only male dog on your team.

Chickpea was adopted by a great young couple who just fell in love with her.

People say I look like a pirate with my black eyepatch. It’s true that I’m trying to steal your heart. I’ve been at the shelter for over 2 whole months now, and I really want to find my forever home. I’m a favorite of the volunteers here and they take good care of me, but it’s just not the same as having a family to call your own. I’m a happy-go-lucky girl who’s always ready for some fun, whether it’s playing fetch in the backyard or showing off my great leash manners on the trail where I’m already a regular. Are you looking for a girl like me to complete your family?

1/23/2008 Update. Lance was adopted today. He is settling in well to his new home and this smart boy has already learned two new commands.

Lance is an active buddy who loves people and playing with other dogs. If he knows that you have treats, he'll be putty in your hands because he loves learning new tricks for the promise of a treat. He'd make a great second dog or running partner.

"Gentle giant" is a great way to describe this handsome guy. Calm, sweet, and friendly, Gordon walks well on a leash, and if he gets off, comes back when called. He gets along with people and other dogs and enjoys playing. He has visited TLAC 4 times and the first 3 times his owners came and got him. This time, they just couldn’t afford to get him out again. Gordon is intelligent and loving and will settle in nicely to a new home!

TLAC will treat Gordon’s heartworm disease here at the shelter and he’ll be ready to find a forever home!

Jelly Bean may be 5-years-old, but with her round potbelly and playful manner, she seems more like an overgrown puppy. Jelly Bean affectionately bounces around just like her namesake, and loves the one she's with, be it man or beast. Jelly Bean will rollover and follow you anywhere for a belly rub, but watch out for the whiplash from her slap happy tail. Part of an elite Town Lake trail dog team, Jelly Bean loves sniffing the scents of the open trail and power walking. A firm but loving owner and regular exercise will make Jelly Bean a wonderful addition to your home. Give this overlooked older dog a chance.

Tragically, Jellybean died in an accident not long after she was adopted.

Despite my name, I haven't always been a wanderer. I was adopted from the shelter as a puppy and had a happy home once, but then the fence fell down and my people brought me back here, even though I was very good with their 6-year-old daughter. I know there's another home for me somewhere--and this time, it will be for keeps! A little more about me: I'm a very nice girl who is immaculately clean, house-trained, crate-trained, and rides well in the car. I know sit, down, and shake. I love swimming and jogging and am a great active pal, but I'm able to calm down and relax too. I enjoy most other dogs, but need to go to a home without kitties. 5/23/2008 UPDATE: Jasmine was looking for scraps of food in a restaurant parking lot when she was found and brought to the shelter for the 9th time. Jasmine is so sweet, affectionate and gentle, the staff decided to give her a chance in the adoption program even though she is older. But it’s hard for even a very special older girl to get adopted when there are cute puppies all around. Jasmine is heart-worm positive, and a recent X-ray found that she has hip dysplasia and arthritis (making a concrete-floored kennel at the shelter hard on her). The staff doesn’t think it’s right to keep her at the shelter much longer because it’s not very comfortable for her, so she needs a special home by 5 p.m. May 30.

I used to live in my family’s home. When they started to keep me outside by myself, I got lonely and was kind of hungry, so I started wandering. I’ve ended up at the shelter more than once, and my family decided this last time they didn’t want me any more. I’m a little worried because it can be hard for an older girl to get a chance. But I’ve still got a lot to offer. I’m friendly and gentle, walk well on a leash and know how to sit. There are advantages to being older, too. I won’t be much trouble. I just want a peaceful, safe place where I will be loved and can love in return.

Billy Jean's story - adopted 8/2008 : Billy Jean joined Austin Pets Alive! in March 2008 and was adopted in August 2008. We will feature dogs who have been with us longer to reach more potential families and find their forever homes faster.

Billy Jean was about a year old and was brought to the shelter by a Good Samaritan. She was great with people and other dogs, and was learning such things as sit quickly and easily. She had been previously adopted but was returned because the adopter's dogs thought three was a crowd. It took longer to find her forever family, though we thought she was worth it.

Penny is a pretty, petite girl who has had the bad luck of going to homes that weren’t right for her. Her first adopter had her for all of four hours before finding out he couldn’t keep a dog and bringing her to Town Lake Animal Center. Her second family returned her when she didn’t get along with their cat. Now she must find a new home -- and soon -- because TLAC doesn't have room to keep her. Aside from cats, Penny is a well-mannered, friendly girl. She is excellent on a leash and good with other dogs. When she’s out walking on Lady Bird Lake trail, she wants to say hello to every person she passes. She’s a smart girl who is alert to people’s wishes. She is housebroken, knows “sit” and can catch a ball in mid-air. When the right home finds Penny, she will fill it with fun and love.

I've spent almost my whole young life at the shelter, waiting. To me, the world is all concrete and chain link--I've never had my own bowl, bed, yard--not even a cool kitchen floor to lie on. Some nice people took me home for two weeks, but brought me back because they found out they're allergic to dogs. They say I'm smart, playful, affectionate, good with kids, and don't even bark much. I'm very eager to please, but I haven't had much chance to experience this big wide world. Can you give me a loving forever home outside these shelter walls?

The shelter is a hard place for a puppy to grow into a dog, but not if you ask sweet little Lenny, who's been here since he was a tiny pup. Even though he hasn't had a chance to enjoy life like puppies on the outside, easygoing Lenny revels in every bit of kindness shown him. He's very affectionate with humans and loves to play with other dogs too. Lenny is also a smart boy, who knows how to sit for treats, is making fast progress on his leash manners, and can even fish for toys at the bottom of the kiddie pool. Lenny is the perfect age to start puppy school, so why not bring this great young guy home and raise him to be your BFF (best friend forever)?

I am very playful, but I can’t seem to get my body to cooperate! You see, I have a condition that makes me overly sensitive to heat or strenuous activity. I still love to fetch, but it’s best to have me catch in the air close by, or fetch about a foot away. I am good for leisurely walks in cooler weather, but must be kept inside during the heat of summer. I am sweet and affectionate, and if you won’t play fetch, you can give me luvin’, which I adore. I am still young and occasionally want to play like a pup, but will adjust gracefully to my restrictions. The staff will happily explain further details about my condition, which is very manageable. I will be an awesome indoor companion at my new forever home!
